Insights to read the Fuorisalone and Milan Design Week

Book Presentation: Visual Archaeology. Theory, Use and Creation (FrancoAngeli) by Paolo Schianchi

On the eve of the Fuorisalone, as Milan transforms into a vast visual landscape of installations, objects, images and narratives, spazioBACCA offers a moment of reflection for those engaging with and interpreting this extraordinary event.

The focus of the April 9 event (6:30 PM) is the book Visual Archaeology. Theory, Use and Creation by Paolo Schianchi, which proposes a different way of looking at images — as expressions that carry memories, references and cultural genealogies. A particularly relevant theme as Milan prepares to immerse itself in an intense visual flow during Design Week.

Understanding images — and objects as three-dimensional images — recognizing their genealogies and tracing their evolution over time becomes a valuable tool to navigate and interpret what happens not only during Milan Design Week, but in contemporary visual culture more broadly.

The event will take the form of a conversation between the author and Christiane Bürklein, who wrote the book’s foreword. An open dialogue exploring the themes of the publication and the evolving relationship between people and images, with space for questions and exchange with the audience.

This event is aimed at journalists, editors, architects, designers, photographers, creatives, and anyone interested in understanding how images and objects can act as tools to interpret and shape our perception of the world.

The visual identity of the event is created by the Rome-based collective Ö, in a coherent dialogue with the book’s themes and the idea that every image is part of a broader cultural stratification.
